Last week, Pakistan expelled a U.S. reporter who recently wrote a piece in the New York Times Magazine about the rise of pro-Taliban forces in the country, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Pakistani officials denied that the journalist, Nicholas Schmidle, had been deported, however, but said he lacked a journalist visa. Schmidle had been a visiting scholar at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad.
