Phone Directory May Resolve Disputed Public Records Request

South Dakota’s Argus Leader had been requesting a list of all state employees, their positions and salaries for months, and they finally got an answer clearly meant to put an end to the matter. State officials said they had no list of names but offered to provide the salaries if the newspaper named the employees it wanted information on. The newspaper responded with a 235-page list taken from the state government employee telephone directory. Some departments appear ready to comply, some not, the newspaper reported. (6/25/07)
