President Cuts Back Authority of Intelligence Oversight Board

President Bush has issued an executive order stripping the Intelligence Oversight Board of much of its authority. The White House provided no explanation for the order but administration critics noted that it has systematically cut back intelligence reforms implemented after Watergate. The Intelligence Board was approved by President Gerald Ford in 1976 after a Congressional investigation into domestic spying and other intelligence abuses. (3/14/08)
