Reporters Committee: Don’t Narrow Court Record Access

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press urged that a special study commission appointed by the Florida Supreme Court, in recommending new rules for electronic records, maintain the state’s tradition of open access to public documents . “A policy of broad access to court documents improves the quality of news coverage, enhances the public’s capacity to monitor the judicial system, and acts as a check against injustice and abuse,” RCFP said in a letter to the Committee on Privacy and Court Records, which is holding a hearing in Tallahassee Nov. 17.
