A FOIA request can result in interminable delay – and sticker shock. The People for the American Way Foundation has been told by the Justice Department it will cost $372,000 to search for the records the advocacy group sued to get last summer on U.S. legal proceedings involving immigrant detainees. Justice came up the price tag just two days before it was due explain to a court why it wouldn’t release the records. Searching for the data PAWF seeks in the 93 district offices would take more than 13,000 man hours, Justice said. (1/31/05)
