Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, and John Cornyn, R-TX,, sponsors of the Freedom of Information Act reform bill signed by President Bush in late December, said they will fight administration efforts to shift funding — and thus oversight — for a FOIA ombudsman from the National Archives to the Justice Department. Sen. Leahy said in a Senate speech the shift is “contrary to the express intent of Congress” and “contrary to the very purpose of this legislation.” Leahy said he hoped the administration will reconsider and “enforce this law as the Congress intended.” (1/24/08)
