Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt, in a statement read on the Senate floor, called the Bush Administration’s attempt to shift the new Freedom of Information Act ombudsman’s office from the National Archives to the Justice Department “simply unfathomable …given the Justice Department’s own abysmal record on FOIA compliance.” Sen. Leahy said the move proposed in the President’s budget is “not only contrary to the express intent of the Congress, but contrary to the very purpose of this legislation.” (2/14/08)
