The Senate Committee approved two bills that would clear the way for the televising of federal proceedings. A bill by sponsored by Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, would give both district and appellate court judges the option of permitting cameras in their courts. A second bill, sponsored by Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., requires the Supreme Court to allow television coverage of its public sessions unless a majority of the nine justices oppose the televising in a particular case for fear it would violate due process rights. The votes were 10-6 and 12-06. (3/30/06)
